Trip to Silverton 9/16/15

Before I start, just to let you know, I added a picture to yesterday's post of the Bud Farm. For some reason, my pictures are taking a long time to sync with my iPad.

Now for today, when we got up in the morning, Pat's floor in her motor home was wet which really worried her. She was afraid of several possibilities. So Bob worked on it while they mopped up and hung stuff out to dry. He found a loose fitting on the hot water heater and it was a fairly easy fix. We were all relieved and still able to hit the road by 10:00 for our drive up Highway 550 to Silverton. We considered taking the steam engine train, but decided the truck would offer us freedom to stop or stay as long as we wanted.

Lisa had read about a Honey Distillery just outside of Durango and wanted to take home small bottles of whiskey to her son in laws. Not far out of town, we came to Honeyville. We all decided to go in and ended up having a riot. They also had different types of honey wine, honey mustard, several flavors of honey spread and more. They were giving us tastes of everything and we all felt pretty good when we left. It was also good for them as we all bought something.

It was a beautiful drive up into the San Juan Mountains and we stopped often to have a look and to take pictures. We saw many shades of green in the pines with the Aspen turning yellow and the jagged red rock.

The mountains got bigger and the scenery more spectacular. We could often see the river winding through the valley and the train tracks for the steam engine.

We arrived into Silverton and were absolutely charmed. It was a quaint little town right out of a cowboy movie. The buildings were old style wood with tall facades and old brick. There was every kind of gift shop, cafe and bar.

Shortly after we started exploring the steam engine rolled in so we were able to get some pictures.

We went into a cafe right by the train called the Shady Lady and Pat treated us to a delicious lunch with hot sandwiches and homemade mashed potatoes. It was done up like an old time saloon and even had a player piano. We poked through some of the shops, shared a yummy, messy funnel cake and headed back into the mountains toward our little homes. We all had some treasures including Bob who found a ten dollar back pack to use on our hike tomorrow.

We had a great Happy Hour, leftovers for dinner and turned in for a good night.
