We drove through so much beautiful rolling farm land in southern Illinois and on into Missouri. It was peaceful to the eye. Missouri also had some rocky foothills and rivers. The sky cleared and the temperature warmed. The air was beautiful as we stopped to take Ben for occasional walks.
We hit some wicked, edge of "my" seat traffic flying around St. Loiuis and Kansas City which started to wear on both of us. We covered a lot of miles and finally pulled into the Emporia RV Park in Emporia, Kansas. Emporia was a quaint, old looking little Midwest town and also the point at which we left the freeway and began our back road, two lane travel.
The park was small and a little rustic with many old looking rigs. The owners were not friendly and there was no TV service, but the bathrooms were spotless. We did have fun talking to a guy camping in the back of his truck and a screen tent. He had the best accent and sense of humor. He was originally from Georgia and Tallahassee, Florida and was now driving guide cars for the over sized loads for wind mills. After enjoying our chat with him, we ate vegetarian hot dogs, beans and the last of leftover potato salad and hit the sack. It was a cold, noisy night being so close to the highway and train tracks. Glad we only paid $27 for that night!
