Breaking Camp, Heading North 9/18/15

We spent the morning packing things up for travel again and said farewell to Pat and Lisa. We had a great time and still had adventures ahead of us as they headed to the Grand Canyon and we headed north up the western side of the San Juan Mountains.

We hadn't had much of a breakfast with all of the activity of the morning, so we decided to have an early lunch. We stopped in the little town of Delores right on the Delores River and got some gas. A guy at the station recommended the River Front Cafe right on the river. It was so perfect as we could sit outside with Ben eating Fish Tacos and listening to the river. Lovely!

We drove on north towards Telluride through very pretty, ever changing country. I click pictures out the window trying to capture it and end up deleting most because of blurs and bug spots.

We went up through Lizard Head Pass following a sparkling little river through graze land with cattle and horses. We entered the San Juan National Forest and wound through the mountains with stunning scenery until we came to the turn off for Telluride.

Unfortunately for us, it was a Friday, Farmers Market and their Brews Festival. We drove right down through the middle of the beautiful little town. There were flowers everywhere, cute narrow mini gingerbread looking houses and interesting looking shops.

Every inch of land was used. The narrow streets had cars parked on both sides and people were walking everywhere and here we are headed straight through town with a Ram Truck and a trailer.  We finally found a street wide enough to make the turn and we headed back out of town. I wish I had gotten a better picture of how crowded it was, but I was panicked as we squeezed between cars. Bob said, "Settle down. We can make it." I said, "Ok, I'll shut up." He said, "Thank you!"

We were disappointed as we were looking forward to exploring the town. Brian and Elise recommended their world famous pizza, the gondola ride and the hike to Bridal Falls. Our timing was all off.

However, we drove on through more beautiful country and our spirits quickly lifted as we headed for Ouray and a nice KOA. Our site was right in the pines on a nice little stream.

We set up and went into Ouray for groceries and dinner.

It was a great day of travel and we wondered if we might stay here and explore a while. Excuse this sentence, but we should have had a warning as to how our night might be, when during our walk down the streets of Ouray after dinner, Ben suddenly squatted right in the middle of the sidewalk in front of the quaint Elk's Club building and left large yellow spots of diarrhea. Trying to pick it up with little plastic doggy bags was almost useless and we decided it was time to quickly get out of town. Little did we know that it was not to be a peaceful night listening to the gurgle of the stream.

  1. Just looked at a video of Ouray on U-tube - what a marvellous place nestling between those mountains - wish we were with you. Mary & John
